Call for energy switching in a day

Smart meter and displaySmart meters would cut the time it takes to switch, according to Ofgem

The process of switching gas and electricity suppliers should only take one day rather than weeks, one provider has suggested.

First Utility, which would benefit from customers moving from major suppliers, said a quick and easy process would create better energy deals.

UK energy regulator Ofgem agreed that a swifter service would be welcome.

But there are warnings that customers still need to be given a cooling-off period to avoid pressure sales.

Waiting time

First Utility said the energy sector should learn from banking, which has just introduced a seven-day switching service for current accounts.

It suggested that, at present, some energy customers wishing to switch for a cheaper tariff could face a five-week wait for the switch to be completed.

Ofgem said it was already working with suppliers to reduce the time it took to confirm meter readings and finish the paperwork.

A spokesman for the Department of Energy and Climate Change said the government was making it easier for people to switch and save money as a result.

However, he said it was "vital" that customers were given time to reflect on their decision and change their minds without facing a financial penalty.
