The bank has apologised to customers for the inconvenience
HSBC has become the latest bank to suffer problems with its digital services as UK customers reported their cards being declined.
A number of customers reported problems with online banking and being turned away from shops at lunchtime on Friday.
The bank apologised for the inconvenience but said services were returning to normal.
Business banking was also affected by the fault.
Customers reported large payments not making it to their destination, and embarrassing episodes in shops as cards were declined.
The bank said only some customers' cards were affected and urged online customers to refresh their webpage if they were still facing problems.
A spokesman said the system was down for about 25 minutes.
The problems come after issues accessing accounts online for customers of Nationwide, Lloyds TSB, Halifax in recent months.
